Maine Roads That Are Terrifying to Drive on During a Winter Storm

After having a very mild fall, much of New England got a taste of winter on Thanksgiving.

Here in Maine, it started as rain, but quickly switched over to snow and sleet.  Some places got a dusting, but others got as much as a foot of snow.

If you spent any time online, you probably saw at least a few pics and videos from those who were attempting to drive home Thanksgiving gatherings.  You know, the posts that make it look like they are driving through hyperspace in Star Wars.

Hopefully, everyone made it home safely.  However, that does serve as a good reminder that some Maine roads get kind of treacherous during winter storms.

Weather events like these can quickly turn even the safest roads into something that resembles an episode of Ice Road Truckers.  Sometimes, driving these roads can be downright terrifying.

Of course, if you live in an area long enough, you learn what roads to avoid during a snowstorm.

Keep in mind that, in some cases, these roads are not that difficult to drive in a storm, but they become dangerous when other drivers are added to the mix.

Sometimes, you cannot avoid taking these roads during a storm.  There are times when these roads are the only way to get somewhere you absolutely need to go.  In that case, please use caution.

Drive slowly, make sure your vehicle is completely cleaned off, and make sure your headlights are on.

Additionally, never attempt to cross a flooded road.  You may think the water is only a few inches deep, but there is a good chance that it could be much deeper.
