Theater at Monmouth Cancels 2026 Summer Season Due to Financial Challenges
A longtime Maine theater institution will not present a summer season in 2026.
Theater at Monmouth, known as the Shakespearean Theater of Maine, announced this week that its Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision to pause its 2026 summer season due to financial reasons.
In a message posted by the Theater at Monmouth board, officials said that after reviewing the organization’s finances, they determined they were not in a position to responsibly move forward with this year’s productions.
“Like many small arts organizations, we have faced rising production costs alongside revenue that has not kept pace,” the board wrote in its announcement. “We have reached a point where producing our regular summer season as planned would put the institution itself at risk.”
The decision marks a major change for Theater at Monmouth, which has brought professional theater to central Maine for more than five decades. The organization has performed at Cumston Hall in Monmouth since 1970, drawing audiences from across Maine and beyond.
Theater at Monmouth says ticket holders and subscribers will be contacted directly in the coming weeks. Refunds will be available for all 2026 tickets and subscriptions. The organization also said staff will be available to discuss other options for those who wish to support the theater through this period.
While the news is a major blow to the theater community, Cumston Hall clarified that Theater at Monmouth and Cumston Hall are two separate entities.
According to a statement from Cumston Hall, Theater at Monmouth is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that rents the Opera Hall and office space inside Cumston Hall. Cumston Hall itself is the town-owned landmark building in the heart of Monmouth.
The hall said that while the theater’s pause in operations is significant, Cumston Hall will continue to host events in some form this year.
“We are confident that we will be able to offer entertainment from Cumston Hall in one form or another this year,” Cumston Hall wrote.
Cumston Hall also said its Food Truck Friday series is still scheduled to begin on June 19, and organizers are actively working to fill some of the gaps left by Theater at Monmouth’s absence.
Theater at Monmouth says its board will spend the coming months evaluating the path forward, including possible new operational models. The board said it cannot make promises about the future at this time, but hopes to eventually welcome audiences back to Monmouth.
Cumston Hall also indicated that Theater at Monmouth may still fill the venue with a holiday show in November and December, if the organization is able to raise additional funds.
Since 1900, Cumston Hall has stood as one of central Maine’s most recognizable cultural landmarks. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming theater season, town officials say the hall will continue to serve the community.
