There Are Only Two Denny’s Restaurants Left in Maine
Once upon a time in Maine, you wouldn't have to drive all that far to find yourself a cheap place to sit and eat.
For a lot of people, that cheap place was Denny's. The massive diner chain operated locations throughout most of the state, many of them operating 24 hours for those that worked odd hours.
But a little over five years ago, things started to change for Denny's as a whole. Food and wage costs increased and so did rent for many of their locations.
Denny's always operated on slim margins leading to several locations throughout the state questioning if they could survive.
And they didn't.
The Auburn and Bangor Denny's Restaurants Are the Last in Maine
Within a span of about four years, Denny's closed almost every single restaurant it operated in Maine. From Ellsworth to Augusta, Biddeford to the two locations in Portland.
For many consistent fans of the restaurant, it felt like it all happened in the blink of an eye.
Two locations of Denny's still operate in Maine. Auburn and Bangor are home to the last remaining spots for the chain and both restaurants seem to be doing well.
Denny's Continues to Downsize in Hopes of Surviving
If you're hopeful that a few more Denny's locations may pop in Maine sometime soon, you might want to think again.
The company closed another 150 restaurants nationwide in 2025 and have put their focus on modernizing their remaining locations.
Some other ways Denny's is trying to survive is by ditching the 24/7 concept at many restaurants, offering more digital capabilities and making sure the menu is streamlined between every location.
